"In engaging in public service, law students are awakened to the sense of personal
satisfaction that comes from helping people, a feeling
they are not likely to experience in their other
classes."

--Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

The Public Interest Law Certificate

Students may be eligible to receive the Public Interest Law certificate, demonstrating to employers a command of legal skills and commitment to serving the least advantaged.

Students must fulfill the academic, practicum, and community service components of the Program. Special graduation ceremonies are held each May at respective schools to honor the graduates.  All family and friends are invited to attend.

**Please note that the deadline for USF students to submit 2008 applications has already passed.**

Academic Coursework Requirements

Students must earn a minimum of 15 credits from the following approved course lists:

USF 2007-2008

USF 2003-2007

Public Interest Practicum Requirement

Students must complete at least 150 hours of supervised legal work in a public interest or government office. The work can be paid, volunteer, or for clinical units. The Pro Bono Project is a great way to find a
placement during the school year.  Public Interest/Public Sector Legal Careers Day (PI/PS Day), held each
February in San Francisco, links students with hundreds of summer employment opportunities across the
country.

Community Service Requirement

Students must complete at least 50 hours of legal or non-legal volunteer services on behalf of community
service or public interest organizations.  Service through the Law Student Pro Bono Project and work with student organizations qualifies.

How Do I Receive a Certificate?

Graduating students must fill out a Public Interest Law Certificate Eligibility Form. The Eligibility Form will be placed in all graduating students' information folder in March. The Eligibility Form will include the due date, and may be returned to career services or directly to Krista Glaser by 5:00 PM on the due date. The Certificate will be awarded at the Public Interest Celebration and Graduation in May. Please contact your school's career services office for the date and time of the 2008 ceremony.

For further information about the Public Interest Law Certificate, please contact Krista Glaser, Program Director, at (415) 834-0100, ext. 307, or at kglaser [at] pic.org.
